Reimagining Early Years Assessment: The Holistic Progress Card (HPC)

In the Foundational Stage, assessment is not about marks—it’s about understanding the whole child. Recognizing this, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), NCERT, proudly introduces the Holistic Progress Card (HPC)—a landmark initiative that redefines how we observe, document, and support learning in the early years.

Rooted in the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the HPC moves beyond traditional academic reporting. It offers a well-rounded picture of each child’s development, capturing their interests, dispositions, participation, emerging abilities, and progress across multiple domains—cognitive, socio-emotional, physical, and creative.

What sets the HPC apart is its emphasis on ongoing observation and teacher reflection. Instead of grades or scores, it provides narrative and descriptive feedback that supports personalized learning pathways. This approach not only honors the uniqueness of each learner but also encourages educators to engage deeply with children’s experiences, strengths, and needs.

The HPC also fosters meaningful collaboration between teachers and families. By making assessment a shared, empowering process, it strengthens the home-school connection and invites families to be active partners in their child’s learning journey.

Importantly, the HPC is aligned with the National Credit Framework (NCrF), ensuring coherence with India’s broader educational reforms. This alignment supports a unified, learner-centric system where progress is recognized and valued from the earliest years.

In essence, the Holistic Progress Card is more than a reporting tool—it’s a reflection of a child’s evolving identity, curiosity, and growth. It celebrates learning as a dynamic, joyful process and places dignity, inclusion, and agency at the heart of assessment.

As India reimagines education for the 21st century, the HPC stands as a powerful symbol of transformation—one that honors the whole child and builds the foundation for lifelong learning.
